Objective:
Can raw beef bones help dogs naturally clean their teeth? This study aimed to find out how two types of raw bones—cortical bone (CB) and spongy bone (SB)—reduce dental tartar (calculus) in adult dogs.

Method:
Eight adorable 3-year-old Beagle dogs took part in this study. Over two testing periods, each dog got a raw beef bone daily:

  1. CB bones (harder, medullary bone): Given for 12 days.
  2. SB bones (softer, spongy bone): Given for 20 days.

Researchers tracked how much dental tartar was reduced using special imaging software.

Results (Prepare to Be Amazed!):

  • CB Bones (12 days):
    • In just 3 days, tartar was reduced by 35.5%!
    • By the end of the study, tartar had dropped by an incredible 70.6%!
  • SB Bones (20 days):
    • In only 3 days, tartar was reduced by 56.5%!
    • By day 12, tartar reduction hit 81.6%.
    • At day 20, tartar was nearly gone, with an 87.8% reduction!

The spongy bones (SB) worked faster and more effectively overall. Plus, the dogs safely chewed and consumed the bones without any issues like tooth fractures or blockages.

Conclusion:
Raw beef bones, especially spongy ones, are a fun, natural, and effective way to keep your dog’s teeth clean and healthy. Goodbye tartar, hello sparkling smiles!

Background:
Mast cell tumors (MCT) are a common and challenging type of cancer in dogs, thriving on glucose for growth. This inspiring story focuses on a brave 7-year-old Pit Bull Terrier who was diagnosed with a mast cell tumor under her right nostril. Instead of turning to traditional treatments, her owner chose a natural dietary approach, showing that hope and alternative methods can make a real difference.

Method:
After her diagnosis in 2011, her dedicated owner declined standard treatments like steroids and chemotherapy, worried about their harsh side effects. Initially, her diet was switched to raw vegetables and cooked fish, but the tumor continued to grow. In 2013, the owner made a bold decision to try a ketogenic diet—a carbohydrate-free, calorie-restricted meal plan featuring chicken, oils, and a radish as a treat. Using a dog food calculator, calories were carefully reduced by 40%.

Results:
This patient’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. Despite her tumor initially reaching 3–4 cm in size and becoming invasive, it began to shrink after switching to the ketogenic diet. Over the following months, the tumor disappeared entirely. She stayed active, alert, and happy during this time, even losing 2.5 kg as part of the process. This incredible dog lived a long, full life, passing peacefully in 2019 at the age of 15—six years after her initial diagnosis—with no signs of the tumor returning.

Conclusion:
This heartwarming case is the first of its kind, showing how a non-toxic ketogenic diet helped resolve a malignant mast cell tumor in a dog. By reducing glucose, which cancer cells rely on, this therapy may have starved the tumor. It’s an encouraging breakthrough that could lead to safer, more holistic cancer care for dogs.

Breeds at Higher Risk for MCT:
Some breeds are more likely to develop mast cell tumors, including:

  • Shar Peis
  • American Staffordshire Terriers
  • Flat-faced breeds like Boston Terriers, Boxers, Bulldogs, and Pugs
  • Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers

This story is a powerful reminder of how much love, dedication, and hope can achieve. Dietary interventions may not be the answer for every pet, but this case opens the door to new possibilities for giving our furry friends a better chance at life.
